Basic concepts in reliability are viewed through the applied lens of various fundamental principles of physics. A useful framework is presented for treating failure mechanisms as probabilistic exceedances in a functional parameter space as probed by customer use conditions over time, with an emphasis on the foundational notions of reliability as they relate to thermodynamics, statistical physics, classical mechanics and quantum mechanics.
